The “Sharkskin Dog”

It’s the breed known by some as the “sharkskin dog,” and some sources suggest that the nickname comes from the Shar-Pei‘s bristly, prickly coat, while other sources suggest that the name (沙皮) is probably derived from the British spelling of the Cantonese equivalent, sā pèih which translates to “sand skin” (but still refers to the texture of its short, rough coat).
