The Cairn Terrier’s original name was the Short-haired Skye terrier, Cairn being the Scottish word for a formation of rocks piled on top of each other to identify boundaries and mark graves. In fact, the dogs were briefly exhibited by that name at dog shows in the UK in 1909. Our homework tells us that this didn’t “fly” with Skye Terrier owners, and the name ‘Cairn Terrier’ was suggested as an alternative
