The Smooth Fox Terrier & the “Terrier Man”

During fox hunts, a Smooth Fox Terrier was often carried in a bag slung over the shoulder of the “terrier man,” or on horseback with a rider. Other times, the terrier followed behind the other hounds (and expected to keep up!). When the fox would go into the ground, the terrier was brought up to go into the hole and expected to flush out the fox (this was rarely a problem); white dogs were highly prized because they were less likely to be mistaken for the fox as it bolted out of the den.
