The “Stick-Close” Guardian Dog

Like most LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs), Maremmas are brave and gentle, protective yet gentle, loyal, and very nurturing. Unlike some other LGDs, however, Maremmas tend not to wander off from the “core,” and for this reason, they’re known as the “stick-close” guardian dog.

The breed that was protecting sheep and goats when Jesus walked the earth was first imported into the United States in the early 1970s by Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. The ultimate goal was to learn about the guarding abilities of the breed and compare it to other LGDs. It started the resurgence of the use guardian dogs. Still, this is an independent thinking dog and probably not a good match for the owner insistent on a “master x dog” relationship.

That was fine with SunCrest Orchard Alpacas and Fiber Works. With a herd of approximately 50 alpacas nestled in the heart of Colorado peach and wine country, mountain lions, coyotes and bears are a concern, and their Maremma has been up to the task.

  1. Awwww, George! Tam, he’s lovely (and that “smile!”)

  2. I have the pleasure of working with alpacas and five Maremmas for a little over two years. The experience of a lifetime.
