Artist’s Thoughts: I wanted to capture the image of love and affection that each breed provides. This image in particular captures the exuberance, attitude and self-confidence, of the Westie breed of hunting dogs. The compact little white terrier with the fluffy fur is also highly intelligent, adorable and quite cunning. I enjoyed imagining how they would interact with their human family and how they would cuddle and love each other as if this were the first day they saw each other.
The eyes were my favorite part of the drawing. They tend to draw in the viewer and capture the essence of the Westie breed. I layered the pencil and erasure to get the fur to look appropriate and full with shadows in just the right areas. I use cotton balls and swabs to help with the charcoal layering and multiple types of pencils with the outlines and details to the facial structure. The drawing is on Strathmore mixed media.
