There’s a Name For That

Subtle picture, right? We’ve borrowed this dog’s posterior to illustrate a term that refers to his or her “nether region.” If you’re in the medical field, you’d probably call the area within the red diamond the perianal, but for dog people, it’s called either the diamond or the vent. It includes the dog’s anus, genitals, coat markings and/or color, and anything else that appears in this marked area.  We’ve heard the word used frequently and thought folks outside the fancy would want to know in case they need to describe the area to the in-laws.

We borrowed a picture of this unidentified dog taken by an unidentified photographer and will happily credit both upon receipt of information.

  1. I think I’ll refer to it as “the diamond.” The “vent” just sounds too much like a self fulfilling prophecy!!
