Where the Red Fern Grows. You Cried, Right?

The dog in this image was the descendant of dogs brought to America by colonial settlers from Scotland and Ireland. These red hounds were the ancestors of today’s Redbone Coonhound, and if you read (and sobbed over) Where the Red Fern Grows, you what we’re talking about. There are those who maintain that Redbones are the most laid back and easy to handle of the Coonhound breeds, and if you disagree, tell us in the comments section below (we’re all here to learn!)

What isn’t in dispute is the Redbone prowess as a “cold-nosed dog,”  meaning she or he is really good at following an old, or “cold,” trail. Though the breed’s main quarry is raccoons, Redbones can track bigger game with great success. Their sweet voice is known to carry over long distances, and is breed trait beloved by their owners. Still, it’s those dark eyes that suckers their owners into making poor choices, i.e., the insanely expensive bag of dog treats. Wait, that’s all of us. Never mind.

  1. Oh my, Where the Red Fern Grows. I haven’t thought of that book in years, and yes, it made me weep.

    • It made everyone sob, Janet. There ‘oughta be a law’ about sad books involving dogs!

  2. Sheesh….I teared up just seeing the title. 🙂 You could do an entire story on the most sob worthy dog books.

    • Add horse books, too,Peggy. We still haven’t recovered from Black Beauty, and it’s been about 20 years since we saw it.

  3. I started sobbing! I was so sad! That is the saddest book that I’ve ever read!

    • You had company, Baylor. A lot of us wept over that story…..
