Where was the Doberman Pinscher “Born?”

We have a wonderful pneumonic device to share with you (and it happens to be our favorite song to come out of the movie, “Purple Rain”).  Scroll down to the video:

The hot young lady in the film (now sixty years old!) is Apollonia, and while some might consider this a stretch, her name will help you remember this factoid during your next game of Trivia Doberman Pursuit (which still needs to be invented): The Doberman Pinscher’s roots are in Apolda, Germany, Apolda being the capital of the Weimarer Land district.

Hey, it kinda sounds like Apollonia if you glue your lips shut while trying to say the name.

Why should you care? If you’re the owner of a Doberman Pinscher, you want to know everything about your breed. Even if you don’t own the breed (and what is wrong with you???), you can regale others with your breed knowledge.

It was in Apolda that Louis Dobermann created his breed, but the first really serious breeder on record was Otto Goeller. Right off the bat, he recognized a good thing when he saw it, and it was Otto who sought to breed for specific characteristics we love in the breed today. As the story goes, Goeller was so keen on his dogs that his neighbors complained about the noise the dogs made, and he was forced to send some of them away. The dogs, not the neighbors.

It was Goeller who began the first Dobermann-Pinscherklub in Apolda in 1899, and a year later, the breed was recognized in Germany.
