Wishbone

It would sadden us that an entire generation doesn’t know Wishbone if we didn’t know that Wishbone lives on in DVDs, You Tube videos, and reruns.

Young parents and grandparents unfamiliar with this character, you must introduce the children in your life to Wishbone. The Jack Russell Terrier lives with his owner in a fictional town in Texas, and only viewers and the characters in Wishbone’s daydreams know that he fantasizes of being the lead character in classics from literature, from Sherlock Holmes and Hercules to Romeo and Montague. The series won several Emmys, but more that, it educated children through entertainment (something we try to do here!) while enticing a parent to sit with their child to watch the show because it was so much fun to watch for both kid and adult.

Wishbone was portrayed by “Soccer,” who lived with his trainer, Jackie Martin Kaptan, on the Plano, Texas ranch where the Wishbone series was filmed.  He appeared in a number of commercials that include Nike and Mighty Dog Dog Food, but his best known role was as Wishbone. He was selected out of 100 dogs who auditioned for the part and appeared in almost every episode of the show during its 1995-1998 run – and to this day, many consider Soccer’s role as Wishbone to be one of the most beloved TV dogs of the 90s, if not of all TV dogs, to date.

Soccer died at the age of 13 in 2001.

  1. Wishbone is one of the reasons I am now owned by a Jack Russell. But, even better (the teacher in me points out) is the way they were able to weave the classics into the modern day story. What a great way to introduce children to the likes of the Count of Monte Cristo, Huck Finn, etc. It has to be my all time favorite series!

    • Agreed, Sue! And purebred dogs in general provide us so many teachable moments as we weave geography, history, language and culture into an entertaining lesson!

  2. He was fun and educational
My version was a Rat Terrier who I truly loved named Stewart❤️❤️

    • Your version kind of looks like he has a vivid imagination, Deborah!
