The “Romanian Baracul” is a massive fluffy dog covered in thick fluffy hair. It might be white, or it might be pale gray , but should have a “vigorous” appearance. Did we mention that it’s big and fluffy?
“Baracul” is the popular local name for the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog, a breed deeply rooted in Romanian history and the Carpathian Mountains. It’s said that the oldest images of these dogs appear as carvings on the Roman column of the Emperor Trajan (98 AD – 117 AD),
Calm, vigilant and courageous, these livestock guardian dogs don’t know fear. They were, and are, used for hunting and by shepherds – bears, wolves, wild pigs, and lynx a few of their prey. As fierce as the breed can be when necessary, Mioritics love children.

Grateful for mentioning our national treasure – Mioritic – congrats for the article.
We are delighted to hear from you, Simona, and that we came to your attention. We would love to learn more about these dogs!
I’m in the process of adopting a dog from Romania and he looks like one of these too
I have a dog from Romania, she looks lika a typically shepherd dog like this in the picture! She was homeless before she came to me.
She is the most calm and kindly dog I ever had, and she never leave me. Where I am, there she is.
Also nice in behaviour against people she don’t know. But I have seen some signs of guarding me,
just discret.
I recommend this dog to all friendly people.
This type of dog is very sensible for how the owner appears.
If too hard, the dog will be very sad.
Jeanna, you could be right. Your dog is adorable!!
we have a female we purchased form an ohio farmer who came from romania.he brought dogs
back with him after visiting family-our dog is one of the pups.Very large, approx 130 lbs, loves
family including kids,friends,grandkids-extremely loving with family and children.VERY suspitious
of strangers;does not like them at all.Anyone attempting a home invasion in our house would
be making a serious, perhaps fatal mistake.Loves family and all children with the deepest love,
but hates strangers.
We love hearing from the folks who own the breeds we talk about, especially when they’re a rare breed, so thanks for writing, Tom. Any chance of seeing a picture of your dog?
Här kommer Melker. Mioritic shepherd. Skulle inte rekommendera rasen som förstagångshund. Vaktar 100% mot allt. Man vet aldrig vad. En bil, en man, en cykel etc. Familjekär, hård, skällig. Aggressiv mot främlingar. Tar mkt plats. Smart, villig att lära.
Tack för din insikt i denna ras, Lena. Det finns inget som ersätter erfarenheterna för dem som lever med en ras.
For everyone else who doesn’t read Swedish (and neither do we, we relied on Google Translate), Lean writes: “Here comes Melker. Mioritic shepherd. Would not recommend the breed as a first time dog. Guard 100% against everything. You never know what. A car, a man, a bicycle, etc. Family-loving, hard, fair. Aggressive towards strangers. Takes up a lot of space. Smart, willing to learn.”
