You’ve seen one of C.M.Coolidge’s paintings probably more than once in your life. The sixteen paintings in the “Dogs Playing Poker” series have always been regarded as a bit “kitschy,” but the art world isn’t rolling its eyes anymore. Recently, a pair of Coolidge’s poker dog paintings (expected to go for $30,000 to $60,000, tops) sold for $590,00.
The first of the painting in the poker series was called “A Bold Bluff.” Have you ever really looked at it and determined the breeds of dogs portrayed in it?
We have no definitive answer, though guesses found on the Internet include Staffordshire Bull Terrier, an English Bulldog, a Boxer, a Saint Bernard, maybe a Great Dane, Mastiff, Cane Corso, a Bloodhound – and a Rough Collie. They never asked us. What do you think?
