What the Heck is “Bondi Art?”

“Bondi art” is a term that pops up fairly frequently when exploring “doggie graffiti.” What is “bondi art?” To find out, we did a little digging.

One of Australia’s most popular and well known beaches is “Bondi Beach” located in eastern Sydney. It’s also a destination point for people wanting to experience Sculpture by the Sea, Australia’s largest annual outdoor sand sculpture exhibition.

For those folks lucky enough to visit that part of the world, it’s likely that they’ll come across the street art of a transplanted New Zealander, Graham Hoete (aka Mr G). He describes himself as having two passions: Aerosol art, and dogs. He spray- paints dog portraits for a living, and regards himself as the only artist in the world dedicated to delivering fine art quality spray painted dog portraits, a string of words that in some circles would seem oxymoronic.  His art has come to be known colloquially as “bondi art.” In 2011, Mr. G was on a mission to paint 100 dog portraits in 12 months, and bully breeds featured strongly in his work. When asked why he painted dogs, Mr G replied: “Because dogs are bloody awesome, that’s why.”

No argument from us.
