Maryland’s State Dog

Title 13, Section 13-303.m Chapter 156, Acts of 1964; Code General Provisions Article, sec. 7-304 made it official. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, named after the famous Bay region of the breed’s origin, was declared the official dog of Maryland in 1964, and in so doing, became the first state to pick an official dog. The late Benny Lane from Queenstown is said to have brought about the naming of the breed as the state dog.
