Pepper and Mustard

The Dandie Dinmont is the only dog breed named after a fictional character. We all know that.

The fictional character was based on real life James Davidson. We know that, too.

Dandie Dinmont, the farmer character, named his dogs “Pepper” and “Mustard,” depending upon their color. We know that (what the heck, NPDD?)

The real life James Davidson also named all his dogs, “Pepper” and “Mustard.” Some of us know that.

What many of may not know is that all of Davison’s dogs were named “Pepper” and “Mustard.” Not sequentially, but at the same time. Maybe ten dogs living in the same house at the same time, all named “Pepper” and “Mustard.” The dogs were distinguished from each other only by the addition of “young,” “auld,” or “little” in front of their names.

Don’t scoff. American boxer, George Foreman has ten children, and he named every one of his five sons, “George.”

    • Wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate this way EVERY year to bring awareness to their vulnerable status, Paul? Perhaps in this country?
