Artist’s Thoughts: I wholeheartedly believe in owning purebred dogs because you know what you’re getting in terms of temperament, size, health issues, and expected life span. As an artist, I’ve seen many old paintings with those little spaniels and wondered what they were. I wanted a small dog for my family, but not a high energy little yappy thing. Those Cavalier King Charles Spaniels would be the dog for me! My first one came to art school with me, sleeping under my easel. After she passed I got two more, who are now 10 years old. They are a total joy!

Painting Details: This is a painting of my sister’s dog, Ricky. He’s from a breeder of champion Golden Retrievers in Maine. He has been a big part of my life as I dog sit him and he always comes over for family dinners. I’ve painted a head shot of him but I loved the way the sun was hitting him in this photo, which I eventually turned into a painting. #NPDDArt2017
