Time now for another Purebred of Interest hint about next week’s breed. It has been owned by a United States President. The President was not Theodore Roosevelt who seemingly owned almost every breed at one time or another: He counted among his dogs Pete, a Bull Terrier; Skip, a Rat Terrier; Jack and Peter, Terriers, Blackjack; a Manchester Terrier; Manchu, a Pekingese; Rollo, a Saint Bernard, and Sailor Boy, his Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
He could have been rivaled by Calvin Coolidge who owned Rob Roy and Prudence Prim, both White Collies; Peter Pan, a Terrier;Paul Pry, a Airedale Terrier; Calamity Jane, a Shetland Sheepdog; Tiny Tim and Blackberry, both Chow Chows; Ruby Rouch, another Collie; Boston Beans, a Bulldog; King Cole, his German Shepherd, Palo Alto, a “bird dog,” and Bessie, another Collie.
Herbert Hoover was another enthusiastic purebred dog owner. His “flock” included King Tut, a Belgian Shepherd;
Pat, a German Shepherd; Big Ben and Sonnie, both Fox Terriers; Glen, a Scotch Collie; Yukonan, the Eskimo dog; Patrick, and Irish Wolfhound; Eaglehurst Gillette, a Setter, and Weejie, a Norwegian Elkhound
