The First Dog Recorded to Have Dined at Westminster

Corgi enthusiasts may be familiar with the name of Thelma Gray. A pioneer among early breeders, Gray also wrote the first book about the Corgi, The Welsh Corgi. Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire Types published in 1934. Her kennel name, Rozavel, will probably be found in most Pembroke pedigrees. Thelma Gray also successfully bred and showed West Highland Terriers, Beagles, German Shepherd Dogs, and Chihuahuas (one of whom went Reserve BIS at Crufts in 1971).

In 1954, Mrs. Gray’s Smooth Chihuahua, “Rozavel Miguel,” dined at the annual dinner of the British Mexican Society. He was reported to have been quite dapper in a green jersey and diamond collar, and quite appropriately since the dinner was at the House of Commons in Parliament making the little Chihuahua the first dog recorded to have officially dined at Westminster.
