Sennenhund!
No, it’s not the response to a sneeze. “Sennenhund breeds” is German for mountain breeds. Though there are many “mountain” breeds, not every breed has the word as part of their name. These do: Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Armenian Mountain Dog, Estrela Mountain Dog, Appenzeller Sennenhund, Greater Swiss Mountain, Bernese Mountain Dog, Entlebucher Mountain Dog, Tatra Mountain Sheepdog, Yugoslavian Mountain Hound, Bavarian Mountain Hound, Montenegrin Mountain Hound, Aires Mountain Dog, and the Mountain Cur.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the largest and oldest of the Swiss mountain breeds, the Entlebucher, the smallest. In its native Switzerland, the Bernese Mountain Dog is known as the Berner Sennenhund which, translated, means “Bernese Alpine Herdsmen’s Dog.”
Herdsman??? Yes. Berners are allowed to compete in AKC herding events as well as at trials offered by the Australian Shepherd Club of America and the American Herding Breed Association. Both AKC and AHBA herding titles are recognized by the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America for titles to be earned toward BMDCA working and versatility awards.
