The “Pinscher” Word

Austrian Pinscher, Doberman Pinscher, German Pinscher, Miniature Pinscher, Affenpinscher – you see where we’re going with this, right? What does “pinscher” mean, anyway?

We would love to provide the definitive answer to this, but in truth, sources vary on the word’s meaning. Some references indicate that “pinscher” is German for “terrier,” and we came across sources that maintain that Louis Doberman actually wanted to create a large terrier when he set out to create the breed we now know as the Doberman.

Other sources believe that the word comes from “Pinsch,” meaning “clipped” (in reference to “clipped” ears). We leave the debate to cynologists. We’re just happy to have the aforementioned breeds around today, including the German Pinscher which factored in the origins of the Doberman Pinscher, Miniature Pinscher, Affenpinscher, and a few breeds without Pinscher in their name (such as the Miniature Schnauzer, Giant Schnauzer, and Standard Schnauzer).
