The Toller: Not a Fox Mix

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers attract ducks with a luring technique called, “tolling.” This dance-like movement is also a strategy employed by foxes which is why the Toller was once thought be a fox/retriever mix. We all know that’s a genetically impossible feat, right? It’s highly improbable that a dog and a fox would be able to produce offspring, in large part because dogs (and wolves, coyotes, jackals and coyotes) have 78 chromosomes and fox have 38. This, according to The Naked Scientists.
