NIPPO – Do You Know What It Is?

If you own an Asian breed (or are just a dog geek and read a lot), perhaps you’ve seen the word, “NIPPO” in connection with those breeds? NIPPO stands for “Nihon Ken Hozonkai” which was founded in 1928 and held its first dog show the same year. Roughly translated, “NIPPO” is the Japanese Dog Preservation Society with one mission:  To preserve and maintain the registries of the native Japanese dog breeds: The Akita Inu, Hokkaido, Kai Ken, Kishu, Shikoku, and Shiba Inu.  NIPPO is the default governing club for the Shiba, Shikoku, and Kishu. The other three breeds can be registered and shown with NIPPO, but the Kai, Hokkaido, and Akita have their own breed clubs and are often not.
