“Setting Dogges”

Most authorities believe that the English Setter was a trained bird dog in England over 400 years ago, the word “setter” coming from “setting dogges,” an ancient term used to describe dogs that “set” or pointed to upland game birds. Back in 1576, Dr Johannes Caius wrote, “There is also at this date among us a new kind of dogge brought out of France, and they bee speckled all over with white and black, which mingled colours incline to a marble blew.” Cynologists believe this could be a description of the blue belton color found in English Setters.
