A Sorry State for a Deserving Breed

Can you imagine? Last year, only 28 Skye Terriers were registered with the U.K.’s Kennel Club, the lowest number of any breed listed on the club’s “Vulnerable Breeds Stats” list for the year. Two years earlier, the club had noted that this “is one of the most vulnerable of Britain’s native dog breeds,” and that it was estimated that fewer than 400 of the breed were left in its native country, making it (and the Otterhound) the rarest of Great Britain’s vulnerable native breeds.

A sad state of affairs for one of the oldest breeds of terriers, one first bred in Scotland over 400 years ago.  NPDD friends, show us your Skye Terriers, and tell us what you love most about this breed!

  1. Unfortunately I don’t have a better picture right now – but what I love most about Skye terriers? Their loyalty, goofines and good manners. My Skye loves me and protects me if needed. He respects me, when I respect him. One time I accidentally passed out at home, and I woke up him licking my face. He will happily go to a long calm walk specially when going to a forest – though he loves brain activity games the best. Just the perfect best friend.

No idea why people aren’t more into them, maybe it’s the fur that scares people?

    • We’ve had the privilege of knowing a few Skye Terriers, Mirjam, and like you, we’re baffled by why more people don’t have them. They are a wonderful, wonderful breed. We’re not sure if you ever saw our video, but at the :47 mark, one of the Skye with whom we worked literally did a “double take,” as he tried to determine whether to follow his friend, or investigate the camera videotaping him. It remains our favorite part of the whole video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXJHYKlKeC4

  3. Skye Terriers have beauty, brains and a sense of humor. What’s not to love?

Part of the problem with their lack of popularity is their lack of popularity. Most people have never met or seen one. Therefore, it’s not a breed that they think of when obtaining a puppy. Also there are so few bred that prospective owners sometimes have to go on a wait list with a breeder. That is really not such a bad thing. It cuts down on impulse dog purchases.

I was walking Bobby last weekend and a woman stopped and said, “Some breeds of dogs just make you smile.” We all need to smile more.

    • A beautiful comment, Judith, and the best of all possible statements: Some breeds of dogs just make you smile.” How wonderful is that?

  4. We have a saying here in Finland. “There is two things I woudn’t chance. A Skye Terrier and a Skye Terrier” and it means that once you have owned one there’s no other breed you would chance it. Their loyalty is without compare, they are clever, they are healthy and on the contrary what people usually think, their coat is really easy to maintain. They make excellent family members as they love to be where ever their owners mind go, they are always ready for the action or just be on their lap on the sofa. There is also a rarer variation of this breed, a drop eared Skye, but not all know this as they are not always mentioned or shown. In the middle of my picture you can see one. I woudn’t chance my Skye Terriers for anything, that unique and wonderful this breed is. ” Once a Skye, always a Skye”.

  6. Hi Anu-Margarita,

My name is Tim Sharp and my granddaughter in Kaiya Rosilez. I believe she is
getting one of you beautiful puppies named Dreamer. We are a family of dog lovers and would love to see the puppie. Do you have a website in English? Thank you, Tim

    • Hi Tim, we think you may have confused us with someone else. We aren’t Skye Terrier breeders, but we can connect you with the right people, if you’d like.
