The Gentleman’s Terrier

Boundaries are a funny thing. For example, the AKC considers the four Belgian Sheepdogs to be four separate breeds, while most other countries (such as the UK) consider them to be one breed. Conversely, the UK considers the two sizes of Manchester Terrier (the standard and toy) to be two separate breeds (the English Toy Terrier and the Manchester Terrier) while in the US, they’re regarded as two types of the same breed.

Whatever way a country regards the Manchester doesn’t alter the fact that the breed known as “The Gentleman’s Terrier” in Victorian England is an elegant, wicked smart, small dog with a strong bark. Except for size and ear options, there are no differences between the Standard and Toy varieties of the Manchester Terrier, the Toy being the diminutive version of the Standard variety.

  1. I’m always happy to see you post about Manchesters. Thank you so much!

    • Melissa, Manchesters, as you know, are terrific dogs! It’s our absolute pleasure to show them off (as if they need help from us!)
